Harderwijk, Ramons-style

3 minutes reading time

More than just tourist attractions

Harderwijk is more than just the Dolfinarium and the beach promenade. The town has a rich Hanseatic history, an old town centre full of details you could easily walk right past, and stories you won’t find in any brochure. Ramons knows what to look for and, more importantly, why something is worth stopping to admire.

Take the gold-leather painted walls he points out with his finger. Or the details in church vaults that most visitors never notice. Ramons always spots them. And when he sees something that moves him, he wants everyone else to see it too.

A town that surprises if you look closely

Harderwijk is a town that rewards those who take their time. Anyone who strays from the well-trodden path will stumble upon surprises: a hidden alleyway, a façade with a story, a monument that has survived the centuries. The town has a quirky character, just like Ramons himself.

His tip? Leave the main streets. Walk slowly. Look up. And ask yourself why something looks the way it does. Harderwijk provides answers to those who ask the questions.

Surprising specialities from artisan producers

Fancy a break from the hustle and bustle, or simply a moment to yourself? Harderwijk has trendy coffee bars, artisan shops and local specialities you won’t find anywhere else. Park your bike, settle down and enjoy what the town has to offer.

Sweet treats in Harderwijk

Patrijs | Patisserie en IJs at Hondegatstraat 4 is a chic ice cream parlour with a touch of glamour. Handmade delights are prepared here every day. Craftsmanship and a love for all things sweet take centre stage.

For those who prefer to enjoy it at home: Paradiso at Wolleweverstraat 3 is the place for artisanal ice cream. Quality, freshness and creativity are key, with a range that surprises every visitor.

't Boerinneke at Havendam 16-A is a story in its own right. Rob gets up early to milk the cows, and his ice cream is made from fresh milk. Every day, the display case is filled with yoghurt and whipped cream ice cream, with a free view of the harbour.

Coffee, tea and Harderwijk chocolates

At Bica’s at Bruggestraat 42, it’s all about flavour and quality. Freshly roasted coffee, an extensive tea collection and the most delicious Harderwijk chocolates, perfect for a moment of indulgence at home.

A taste of Italy on Hondegatstraat

Local produce and a centuries-old bakery

Het Melkhuisje at 42 Hoogstraat was once the local milkman’s shop and is now a charming shop full of fresh local produce. Real milk and custard in thick glass bottles, pure and local.

De Ouderwetse Bakkerij at Kleine Marktstraat 1 has been a household name in Harderwijk since 1839 and is proud to hold the title of Purveyor to the Royal Household. Its speciality? The Zeebeer, a unique loaf named after the sea wall that held back the waters of the Zuiderzee. A true Harderwijk treat.
