Shopping in Harderwijk

My discoveries in the best shopping streets

Donkerstraat: Harderwijk’s Shopping Hub

My day of shopping began in Donkerstraat, Harderwijk’s main shopping street. This longest street in the town offers exactly what I was looking for: a varied selection of fashion shops such as H&M, Cotton Club and Jack & Jones. But what really caught my eye were the beautiful historic buildings housing many of the shops. Shopping amidst so much history – that just makes it extra special!

De Hondegatstraat: The Cutest Little Street

The absolute highlight of my visit? De Hondegatstraat! This narrow street in the medieval city centre is packed with small, independent boutiques you won’t find anywhere else. At Blije Meisjes, I stumbled across vintage gems and upcycled creations. And at GOODIES by Tamara, I found beautiful lifestyle items that you don’t come across everywhere. These are exactly the kind of local heroes Harderwijk is famous for!

More than just shopping

Another thing I really enjoyed was being able to relax on a terrace on the Markt after all that shopping in the high streets. The combination of shopping in a charming Hanseatic town with great places to eat and drink makes a day out in Harderwijk complete. On Fridays, shops are open until 9 pm for late-night shopping – ideal if you fancy a longer day of shopping!

Harderwijk’s town centre really does offer a varied range of shops. From trendy fashion boutiques to charming specialist shops, from large chain stores on the main streets to unique concept stores in the smaller side streets. The Luttekepoortstraat and Smeepoortenbrink are also definitely worth a visit if you like variety.

My tip for shopaholics

Start your route on Donkerstraat for the larger shops and clothes shops, then wander off into the side streets such as Hondegatstraat for the unique boutiques. Don’t forget to pop along to the Saturday market (between 8.30 am and 1.30 pm on Kloosterplein) and round off your day at the Ouderwetse Bakkerij on Hoogstraat. Parking? The first two hours are often free at car parks such as the Houtwalgarage!

Shopping in Harderwijk is a truly wonderful experience. The mix of historic atmosphere, varied selection and charming town centre makes it the perfect destination for a day’s shopping. And the best part is: you’re supporting so many local businesses with their lovely shops!
