Island hopping in the Netherlands? Yes, absolutely! It is possible. On Lake Veluwe, you will find various small islands where you can simply moor your boat and then enjoy the natural beauty and tranquility.
Sail from Harderwijk towards Zeewolde and stop along the way at one of the islands in the Veluwemeer. Take a dip in the waters of the Veluwemeer or dream away to the sound of the lapping water. You are even allowed to fire up the BBQ on the islands. If that’s not a holiday feeling, I don't know what is. After a wonderful day on the water, finally dock back in the harbor of Harderwijk.
About the Islands on this route
The Wigeon
This peaceful spot is located on Lake Drontermeer, just past the Roggebotsluis. It is small and compact, with open water all around and plenty of room for silence. A lovely stop for anyone in need of a moment of peace.
The Coot
This island is known for its sheltered inner harbor, where you can comfortably moor for an extended period. In the spring, nightingales can be heard here. It is a pleasant place to stay a little longer and explore the surrounding nature reserve.
Huizerhoef
A small, intimate island in the Gooimeer with a safe harbor basin. Forest, grass, and a small beach make this a relaxing stopover, close to Huizen. Ideal for a short break during a boat trip.
Knarland
This nature island in the Wolderwijd has spacious moorings and plenty of greenery. It is a peaceful stopover, but also a good base for exploring the surrounding area further. It is located in the Nijkerkernauw, not far from Harderwijk.
Leidam
Leidam is a long breakwater in the Wolderwijd, diagonally opposite the aqueduct near Harderwijk. Here you moor close to the city, while still being right in the middle of the water. A unique combination of proximity to the city and open water.
The Sedge
This green family island in the Wolderwijd, near Zeewolde, features a small beach, playground equipment, and quiet spots among the reeds. In good weather, it is a cozy, lively place for the whole family. Ideal for mooring with children.
WE-land
Not an island, but a natural harbor on the Nuldernauw, with the Horsterwold as its backyard. This spot is directly accessible from the navigation channel. Ideal for those who want to stay here for a few days.
The Reeds
A peaceful nature island with a bowl-shaped, sheltered harbor in the Wolderwijd. There is a small beach and a nature playground, and plenty of birds can be seen in the mornings and evenings. A good spot for those seeking nature and tranquility.
The Ral
This lively island in Lake Veluwe lies between Elburg and Harderwijk. It is sheltered among the trees, has small swimming beaches, and offers space for a campfire by the water. A suitable place for a longer stay.
The Shell
De Schelp consists of two arc-shaped islets in the Gooimeer, which together form a sheltered bay. There are swimming beaches and woodland, and a sheltered spot out of the wind can always be found. A lovely place to take a break or go for a swim.
Pierland
Pierland is located in the middle of the Veluwemeer and is the largest island of the Randmeren. It has two harbor basins, swimming beaches, and space for a campfire and camping. A place to both stop for a short while and stay longer.
The Little Swan
This island is located in Lake Drontermeer, halfway between Roggebotsluis and Elburg. It is a small-scale mooring with thirteen berths, surrounded by nature. A quiet choice for those who do not like crowds.
The Oak
De Eekt is located in Lake Drontermeer, north of Elburg. This green island offers a quiet mooring directly on the navigation channel, with space for twenty boats. A pleasant place to go ashore for a while or to spend the night.
The Dead Dog
The oldest island of the Randmeren, also known as the bird island. Here you have a view over open water, perfect for nature lovers and canoeists. A special place because of its history and the birds that can be found there.
